Brian Edward Carroll

PROGRESS

  • MONDAY, JUNE 1, 2009

Brian is being released from the hospital this afternoon. He is ready to get back home! He has to take it easy and stay around the house until he goes back for his next appointment on June 10. They will remove the stitches at this time. We will do another update after this appointment to let you know that all is well!

    SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2009

They removed the drain from Brian's head this morning. It was stitched up and he is doing well. He is being moved from the NSICU to a regular room on the 4th floor this afternoon.

    FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2009

Brian is doing great today! His head is still sore from the surgery. He will stay in the NSICU for one more night. Everything is fine, but they want to keep him here until the draining is complete. He is very bored and has been sleeping off and on and watching a lot of TV!

    THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2009

11:00 PM: Brian has rested well today. His neck pain eased up after he was given some pain meds. His head is still sore but that is expected! He was able to tolerate some liquids earlier, so they let him eat a sandwhich tonight. He handled this fine and was glad to be able to eat! When the drain is removed from his head, he will be moved to a regular room...hopefully tomorrow!

1:00 PM: We just saw Brian for the first time! He is settled into the NSICU now. His head and neck are a little sore and his throat is scratchy from the breathing tube. Other than that he if doing great! He's pretty groggy, but glad the surgery is over!

9:15 AM: Doctor just called and said they were finishing up! Everything went great! He is being taken to the NSICU for about 36 hours and then probably a regular room before he is released. Praise God!

8:05 AM: We just got a call from surgery. He took the anesthesia well and the surgeon started about 15 minutes ago.

7:45 AM: They took Brian back to surgery at 7:20 AM. All of his blood work was good and they do not think there will be any troubles. I will update when I hear a report from surgery.

    WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2009
Brian has been admitted this evening and is preparing for tomorrow (CT Scan, X-rays, blood work, IVs, etc.). We had an extremely long wait for his room today (10 hours), but now he is settled in and ready for his surgery in the morning. The doctor has said that this surgery is not extremely risky, and the main concern with this type of procedure is infection. He is expected to stay in the NSICU for one to two nights after surgery. We will be updating the site tomorrow to let everyone know how the surgery went. Surgery is expected to last a couple of hours.

    THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2009
Brian's appointments with the neurologist went well. During his first appointment on April 22, he had a CT Scan that looked great. His incision on his head was still healing, so Dr. Espisido wanted to see him back in two weeks.

He went back this Monday, May 11. His incision looked better and his second surgery was scheduled. He will have surgery on May 28 to replace the missing bone. We will update the site before and after the surgery to let you guys know how he is doing. Thank you so much for your continued support and prayers.

    TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2009
Brian has been doing great since he has been home! He went to outpatient therapy for the first time today. He had initial evaluations for Speech Therapy and Physical Therapy. The therapists were amazed at his condition after being out of a coma for only three weeks. They did several tests and he did great on all of them. The therapists released him and said that he did not need further treatment!

He has a neurologist appointment at UMC on April 22. This is when his surgeon will decide when to replace his skull. His headaches have been much better. His right eye is still blurry but has cleared up some. If his eye is still blurry three months from the accident, he will see an Neuro-Opthomologist.

    TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2009
2:30 PM: Brian's therapists and doctor met today and they have set his discharge for Thursday! He will be able to leave Thursday morning and go home! He will have a neurologist appointment in a couple of weeks. The doctor will then decide when to have the surgery to reattach the piece of skull that was removed. He will need some outpatient therapy and the length of that therapy will be determined later. This has been such a miracle! He will be released completely only 27 days after the accident! Please continue to pray for his long-term recovery. He is still having headaches and his right eye has pretty bad blurred vision.

    SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 2009
3:40 PM: Brian has had a good couple of days. His head continues to hurt, but it does ease up at times. He was able to spend some time outside yesterday and today. He has therapy everyday except for Sunday. His speech therapist has said that he is very high level and does not need much more in that department. Physical Therapy is going good, and they mainly walk around to work on balance.

    THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2009

5:15 PM: Brian is still hurting from his headache. He may get an MRI later if the Neurologist orders one. Earlier this morning his head felt better, but after some therapy it started to get worse again. His trach sutures were removed today and it is healing well. He has eaten more today. He slept a little better last night.
  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 2009

10:00 AM: The CT Scan showed improvement from his last one. They did not see anything abnormal that would be causing the headache. This was a relief, but his headache has not eased at all. He is having a very hard time sleeping and eating because of the pain. He has already had his speech therapy this morning. He performed on normal levels on almost all of the activities. Please pray that his headache will stop so that he continue therapy at a normal pace.
  • TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 2009

1:50 PM: Brian started therapy today. He is battling a severe headache. He is given medicine regularly, but it does not help much. His evaluations from the therapists will be finished later today. He is having trouble eating because he is nauseated. Besides the headache he is doing great and progressing quickly.

5:45 PM: Brian is going to get a CT Scan in a little while. His headache has continued and they want to make sure there is nothing wrong that is causing the pain. His physical therapy was very brief today due to his headache. As soon as his headache eases, his therapy will continue.

  • MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2009

5:45 PM: Brian was transferred to the University Rehabilitation Center today. This will be the final stage in his recovery away from home. They are expecting him to be here around ten days, but his evaluation will tell more tomorrow. His recovery has really been miraculous. Thank you so much for praying and please continue! Praise God!
  • SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 2009

6:15 PM: Brian has moved into a room. He's more comfortable now and has more privacy. He is still drinking fluids because his stomach is still very sensitive. He is nauseous and has been sleeping most of the day.
  • SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 2009

1:20 PM: Brian has had a good morning. Other than some headaches, and dehydration, he's doing fine. He will have his first solid food meal today. He will be moved today from the icu, to an extended stay unit so that he can start to do rehab.
  • FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2009

5:30 PM: Brian was awake when i went in to see him. Doctors removed his Trach today, and also the drain from his brain. He is able to talk now. Communication is much better, and he seems a lot less frustrated. He seems to be himself, constantly making those "Brian" gestures and flirting with all of the nurses! Other than complaining about the food, Brian has had a great day! He should be leaving the icu in a few days, and moved into a more extended stay room to start rehab. One of the nurses told us that they have never seen a patient with his injuries recover this fast!! Praise God for his amazing Power.

10:20 PM: Brian had a good visit tonight. His voice was stronger than ever and was able to articulate during conversation.  He was nauseous from the lack of whole food and the amount of morphine in his system. He complained of a headache and was given medication for it shortly before we left. His souchers were removed today, so this could be the cause. He was very tired, and he started to drift into a deep sleep as visiting hours ended.

  • THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2009

3:00 PM: Brian woke up today! He is communicating well by nodding his head and trying to talk. He cannot talk right now due to the trach. He is breathing on his own and the ventilator is completely cut off. He is still receiving some oxygen though. The speech therapist will come by sometime to see if he can start talking soon. His memory seems to be good but he does not remember the accident right now. He is doing great and we give God all the glory for this wonderful miracle! Visiting is still being limited to family for now.

6:30 PM: Brian was given some benedryl because he was sneezing earlier. This made him pretty groggy. He pulled his feeding tube out earlier, so they had to replace it. He is very tired at the end of each visit. They have clamped the drain from his brain and will do this for 24 hours. If his cranial pressure does not increase, they will remove it. He is expected to move out of ICU in a couple of days.
  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 2009

3:00 PM: Brian is still doing good. The doctor says he is progressing normally. The stage he is in now is agitation and confusion. He was given something to calm him down a little this afternoon. The dietician told us that he is receiving the equivalent of 2,000 calories per day through his feeding tube. He is taking this very well which is a good sign since some patients cannot tolerate this.

10:00 PM: Brian is still coughing and getting the hiccups a lot, so they have given him some medicine to knock both of these out. He is still being given the medicine to keep him calmed down. He is also still on three antibiotics. His respiratory rate is 20 breaths per minute. The machine is set to breathe at 8 breaths per minute and he is doing the other 12 on his own. His temperature spiked to 103.7 degrees today. They have moved his IVs from his chest, where they have been since the beginning,  to his hands. This was done just in case the IVs were causing any infection at those spots. They have put the cooling blanket back on, and his temperature is back down to 100 degrees. He is resting well now.

  • TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2009

6:30 AM: Brian had a good night. He is still responding well. The nurse had to put loose restraints on him during the night so that he would not try to pull on his trach and feeding tube. This is very normal since he wants to get rid of the things that are bothering him. He is moving his entire body frequently. He is given pain medication to make him a little more comfortable. His temperature is 101 this morning. He is still in the early stages of coming out of his comatose state.

10:00 PM: They tried to take him off of the ventilator for a small time today just to see how he would react. He did not do very well so they will keep him on it for awhile. He is still trying to breathe on his own though. He is continuing to be very responsive. He is transitioning into the 4th stage of coming out of his comatose state. There are 8 total stages.

  • MONDAY, MARCH 9, 2009

1:00 PM: Brian had a CT scan and chest x-ray this morning. They are going to keep the drain in because there is still some fluid. The CT scan showed improvement. There is still some swelling but it has gone down a lot from what it was. The chest x-ray shows that his pneumonia looks much better. The antibiotics he is on now are working well. The allergic reaction has stopped and his white blood cell count is down. His sedation medication has been completely cut off. He is really trying to breathe on his own. They expect for him to wake in a few days.

10:05 PM: Brian has opened his eyes. He is following some commands like squeezing a hand and moving his feet which is far beyond what was expected at this point. The nurse said there are several levels of coming out of the comatose state, and Brian is in the beginning stages. They are only allowing immediate family to see him at this time due to any confusion that he may have in this fragile state. He is continuing to try to breathe on his own. His temperature is still at 100 degrees. He is also yawning and coughing.

  • SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2009

12:30 PM: Brian's temperature is currently 99.5 degrees. They have taken him off of all of the antibiotics due to the allergic reaction. They are going to put him back on each of the antibiotics one by one to see which caused the reaction. Since he is off of the antibiotics his white blood cell count is back up which may delay the doctor cutting back his sedation medication. He is definitely responding to pain. The nurses pinch him every hour to make sure he is still responsive. He does not like this at all! He moves his whole body in response to the pain. When he hears voices, he moves his eyes (while closed) and moves his head some. We're still not sure when they plan to completely cut off his sedation medication, but we hope in the next couple of days.

5:45 PM: Brian is back on three antibiotics. One has remained the same, two have changed, and they have cut one out completely. They have clamped the drain that has been draining fluid from his brain. They will leave it like this for 24 hours and then do a CT scan. If there has been no build-up of fluid, they will probably remove the drain. Temperature is still at 99 degrees and they would like it to be around 97 degrees.

  • SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2009

5:30 PM: Brian is doing good today. His temperature has fallen from 102 degrees this morning to 99 degrees. He is continuing to move some. His sedation medication is still at 20%. For the most part, he has had a steady and uneventful day.

9:30 PM: Brian had a slight allergic reaction (small rash) to one of the antibiotics. They're running tests to find which antibiotic is causing it. His temperature is at 100.7 degrees now.

  • FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2009

8:00 AM: Brian is looking good this morning. His sedation medication has been reduced to 20%. His white blood cell count is down so the antibiotic is working well. His temperature is at 100 degrees.

4:15 PM: Brian is still getting intense respiratory therapy to fight the pnuemonia. His temperature is around 98 degrees. There are slight signs that he is making attempts to breathe on his own.

  • THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2009

3:00 PM: Brian has a bacterial infection in his lungs that was also caused from aspirating. They are working hard to fight this and have put him on an additional antibiotic. They will continue to monitor this and the pneumonia. His temperature is now around 99 degrees. He is looking good and responding slightly to voices during visitation.

8:30 PM: The bacteria that is causing the infection is very common and the antibiotic being administered is specific to fight this bacteria. He has had continued respiratory therapy including being placed on a bed that vibrates to break up the mucus. His pain medication had been cut back to 30% of what it once was. He also had the hiccups today (for 5 1/2 hrs)!

  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 2009

Throughout the night Brian had respiratory therapy to break up the mucus in his lungs. His chest xray shows that his pneumonia has stayed about the same but his lungs sound clear. His cranial pressure is back down to normal. His temperature is where it needs to be, but they are continuing to keep the cooling blanket on him. He has responded well to being taken off of the paralysis and he shivers and twitches some. The tracheotomy went well.

Later in the evening his temperature began to rise again. They will monitor it overnight. His pain medication is beginning to be cut back and they expect him to be awake in a couple of days.

  • TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009

Brian has developed pneumonia. He aspirated during the wreck which caused the pneumonia to set in which also caused the fever which inturn caused the increase in pressure on his brain. The main concern for the doctors now is to get control of the pneumonia which will make the fever subside. They have put him on another antibiotic and will also perform a tracheotomy. The breathing tube can build up bacteria which can get into his lungs. The tracheotomy will be more comfortable for him when he wakes. They will continue to monitor the pneumonia with chest xrays. They are also removing him from paralysis so that his body can better absorb nutrients. Later in the evening, Brian's nurse let us know that he started to respond when he was pinched. This was a good sign that he was responding to the pain.
  • MONDAY, MARCH 2, 2009

Overnight, Brian had an increase in swelling in his brain. At first, they did not know the cause, but later found that he had fever. His fever was at 102 degrees and needed to be around 95 degrees at this time. The fever causes an increase in swelling. They put a cooling blanket on him and he responded well. His temperature dropped to around 95 degrees and they were able to remove the blanket.
  • SUNDAY, MARCH 1, 2009

Brian had a good night and a fairly uneventful day. He had a CT scan which showed some improvement in swelling.
  • SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2009

Brian's surgery went as well as possible. The surgeons felt they did the best they could of removing the blood clots. Due to impact, his brain shifted 1 cm. The doctor said that this should slowly correct itself. Now we are just waiting for the swelling to reduce. He is being kept paralyzed so he will not fight the breathing tube and other efforts. He is on two antibiotics and high doses of Morphine and Ativan to keep him sedated.
